Although it's been a few years since its launch, Fallout 4 continues to be the gift that keeps on giving, especially since many fans of the franchise didn't buy into Fallout 76. With the additional mods, the wasteland changes significantly in different ways, making for new experiences every play through. With enough creativity and modification, Fallout 4 never gets old.
For those that haven't played through the game's story for the first time, we suggest modding the game on the second run or a second character. The story, side-missions, and exploration are enough to keep anyone entertained for a good while. This is mostly for those that have been playing for a few years and want to tweak their experience. These are mods that can be found on both the PC and the console versions.
Fallout 4 Best Mods
In this guide, you will get a list of top 60 plus mods, tweaks, weapons, settlements, etc. for Fallout 4. They are sorted in different categories that will help you to locate them fast in the long guide.
Unofficial Patch - UFO4P
This one's more of a background running a mod that you'll notice as you play, but it won't change game aesthetics like a graphics mod. This one fixes any issues and bugs that the official patches don't address. We all know that Bethesda games can be a little less than perfect in the technical sense, so adding this mod is a great way to prevent any smaller issues. If you're going to mod, go ahead and add this one to the list. Here's the download link for Xbox One and PC
Cheat Terminal Mod
Cheat Terminal brings a lot of feature to the game like God Mode, Infinite Ammo, Infinite Carry Weight, Infinite Ap, etc. Below you can read the full list of features. The mod is available for PC and Xbox One.
For advance level game tweaks and mod configuration, you can try five tools depending on your requirements. These tools offer you to get all the settings associated with Mods at one place, along with managing games settings also. Below is the list with a short description. Click the mod name links to view the original download page and detailed information.
Mod Configuration Menu - Central location for mod configuration, access through the Pause menu.
Mod Organizer 2 - Want to test various mods, then this tool offers you a single platform to add and remove reliably.
LevelUpMenuEx - New Menu that will allow you to add new perks and skills in the game, you can also remove classic perks using this mod.
Game Configuration Menu - Modify any game settings through this menu from one place.
Realistic Conversations Fallout 4 - Makes NPC’s clever.
Character Customization Mods
There are two best mods we found you can choose in the game is Ponytail Hairstyles and KS Hairdos. The first one adds 32 new standalone hairstyles is available for Xbox One. The second is again a hairstyle mod but brings around 725 different styles on PC.
Download Ponytail Hairstyles for Xbox One.
Download KS Hairdos for PC
Armor & Suits Mod
Under the Armor mods, there are two mods you can try if you had not yet tested anything. They are Armorsmith Extended & BodySlide and Outfit Studio. Both are extended tools that allow you to manipulate body armor and do tons of changes. Go with the second one if you want to do more like completely customizing outfits and bodies without editing mesh files. The mod offers slider-based UI that allows you to adjust persona shapes. I had also listed some good Suits you can try if you want to go with the ready-to-use solution.
Items, Perks, and Supplies Mods
I am adding some useful mods that can help you to gather more or even unlimited amount of supplies easily in Fallout 4. The mods are suitable for items like weapons, ammo, armor, power armor, etc. All listed mods work differently offering you various features to use. But they are not available for all platforms. So you can try the useful ones based on available platform.
Spawn Items (Xbox One): Spawn all kinds of items in the game whenever you want. Works with Weapons, Ammos, Armor & Power Armor, consumables, crafting materials, supplies, NPC, Enemies, Targeting HUD, All resistance, SPECIAL, Perks, Magazine, etc.
Choose Your Own Perk (PS4): Just read the perk from a book to collect it, start reading from lowest to highest.
FreeMaker (PS4): Similar to Spawn items, this one allows you to product items without the requirement of a material or a perk. Work with Automatron, Far Harbor and Nuka World DLC’s.
Unlimited Crafting Supplies Container (Xbox One): The mod adds a chest outside Vault 111 in the back of the car that gives you unlimited crafting/building materials.
Militarized Minutemen (PC): Get dozes of modular military-themed clothing items, you can also install Leveled List version that adds a Level system. Items are unlocked based on leveling up. Unit you will get are Infantry, Rangers, Recon, Cavalry, Field Medics, etc.
Mods To Tweak Maps
There are ample of mods that work on the map part of Fallout 4, but I am listing only two of them which are widely downloaded and used. One of them is Improved Map With Visible Roads for Xbox One, the mod enhances roads, train tracks, and topography, and you will see corrected placement map markers and a few enhancements. The second one is Fixed Alpha Maps, which works on the alpha maps.
Weapon Mods
Fallout 4 has tons of mods for weapons, some of them offer you customization, new weapons, etc. I tried to bring the list of the best one with a short description of what they do. Workshop Framework: Faster more stable workshop scripts.
Faster Workshop (Workshop Lag Fix): Optimize Workshop loading time.
Workshop Plus: God Mode of Workshop creates anything anywhere.
Building Tweaks
The settlement is a core component of Fallout 4, at the very beginning of the game you will start with setting up your base camp in the destroyed world. So there are many things you have to do here, but you can save your time by using some mods. Check the list below.
Place Anywhere Xbox One: Place objects in the red zone, move, rotate and resize.
No Build Limit PS4: Remove all the build limits in all base game settlements.
Scrap That Settlement PS4: Scrap everything except roads, building, telephone poles, cliff, light sources, markers, etc.

SimpleGreen - SimpleSeasons 'Spring' (PS4): Change the look of the grass and trees to reflect four seasons.
Winter Overhaul: Winter Season, get snow textures on surrounding, terrain, weather, etc.
Mods to add New Locations, Quest & NPC
In this final section of the list, you can find mods that can extend your game by offering you more. Like adding new quest, extra features, and NPC’s.
Unique NPCs - Creatures and Monsters of the Commonwealth: Add a variety of NPC creatures in the game. Get creatures of different size, shapes, species, sub-species, etc.
Pack Attack NPC Edition - Gangs With Group Combat Tactics: This mode will apply a social combat AI to NPC Gang.
Project Valkyrie: New massive quest with four custom and fully-voiced companions, 20 quest and alternate endings.
Minutemen Takeover - Nuka World: Invade Nuka World with the minutemen.
Fallout 4 Northern Springs DLC: Get new location bigger than Nuka World and Far Harbor. Get a new quest, new weapons, armors, settlements, etc.
Hope the comprehensive list of mods will help you find a lot of tweaks in one place. Depending on what you are looking for you scan through the sections above and try out the mod. Remember the mods are not official files and there is a possible chance of game crash and bugs, do backup everything before doing any changes.
More updates coming soon
Fallout 4 allows you to take on an American life after nuclear fallout, but instead of rescuing people, forming settlements, putting the Minutemen back together and finding your son, why not customize the experience to suit your needs? There are thousands of mods available for Bethesda's title and many of them share similar qualities to Skyrim counterparts.
We rounded up some of the best to get you started.
Similar to how Alternative Life works in Skyrim, with this mod installed you regain control of your destiny .. or rather how it begins. You will be able to select from 36 different occupations, each dictating starting gear, faction relations, and more.
Armor and Weapon Keywords Community Resource (AWKCR)
Aside from the horrifically long name, this incredible mod allows for other mods to work some magic with a standardized framework for armor and weapons. Not only that but crafting menus, color and decals and slot usage are all affected, to help prevent conflicts. If you wish to add some more stuff for your character to use, you need this mod.
Armorsmith Extended
After installing AWKCR, you'll want to pick up Armorsmith Extended. This is a huge mod that does a bunch of things. It can allow for shirts and other wearables to be worn under armor — because who wears plated armor on the skin? — and even make it possible to wear bandannas and other accessories while rocking a helmet.
Other cool features include the ability to rename clothing and craft more item types.
Venturing out into the wasteland with only the companions Bethesda deems acceptable isn't much fun. There are a number of beasts that would make interesting followers, which is exactly what Beast Master unlocks. You will now be able to take a freaking Brahmin with you. Who doesn't want a friendly two-headed cow to take down some mutants?
Craftable Ammo
You can now craft ammo. Here's to never again running out of rounds mid-fight.
Darker Nights
Just like Skyrim, the nights in Fallout 4 are way too bright for my liking. And just like Skyrim, you can install a wonderful mod called Darker Nights, which — unsurprisingly — makes the nights darker. You have a choice of just how dark you wish the nights to become too for some flexibility.
DEF_UI
This mod not only allows for the customization of the HUD (health, XP, V.A.T and other elements) but also the inventory and storage screens. It achieves something similar to that of Sky UI in Skyrim, making it much easier to manage everything, especially with a keyboard and mouse.
Full Dialogue Interface
This mod allows you to see exactly what your character is going to say in response to NPCs. When in a conversation in Fallout 4, it can prove frustrating to realize that your character's voice lines differ from selections on the dialog wheel. This is what Full Dialogue Interface addresses.
You will now be able to immerse yourself, knowing exactly what you're getting into.
Homemaker
Homemaker (also known as Expanded Settlements) is a mod for settlement Gods. Ideal for the creative mind, this mod allows for the creation of larger buildings with ease, not to mention new build sets for unique styling of settlements and a massive amount of objects that can be placed at secured locations. If you're a fan of the settlement system, you need this mod.
Improved Map with Visible Roads
The in-game map is handy to get around, but it doesn't show roads, which are far more important in the early game and on harder difficulty settings. Improved Map with Visible Roads does exactly what the name implies. It improves the map and adds roads across the board so you know where the nearest winding route of concrete is located.
More Where That Came From
The radio makes for more pleasant long journeys and adventures. With More Where That Came From installed, you'll want to rely on fast travel less in order to enjoy the 111 lore-friendly tracks added to the list of songs available for playback. This mod, in particular, adds all the tracks to the Diamon Radio station.
True Storms
True Storms is an exceptional mod, by the same modder who made the similarly named mod for Skyrim. This mod adds new weather patterns, sounds, visual effects, and other configurable details that give the wasteland some variability when venturing out the front gate.
Unlimited Settlement Objects
This one removes the maximum number of objects that can be placed in any one settlement. Enough said.
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch
Bethesda games need some fixing, even after official patches have been released by the company. The same authors of the unofficial Oblivion and Skyrim patches return with the Fallout 4 patch. Hundreds of gameplay, quest, NPC, object, text, and placement bugs and issues are addressed in the mod.
It's safe to use and shouldn't break the game unless you have a ton of mods, where incompatibility may exist.
Worthy mention
The Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) deserves a callout in our list, even though it's not technically available through Nexus. This handy tool allows for the installation and running of more powerful mods that can take advantage of even deeper hooks into Fallout 4.
Best Fallout 4 Graphics Mods Pc Games
Agree with our list? Have some favorites of your own? Sound off in the comments.
For all those who avoided the full sticker price of a brand new AAA game plus the pricey season pass, your patience has paid off now that Fallout 4 GOTY is here, which bundles all the F4 expansions and the high-resolution texture pack in one place. (If you wait until Black Friday, I have a sneaking suspicion you might get an even bigger discount..)
But if you waited until the Game of the Year edition arrived to jump on Bethesda's Commonwealth entry in the Fallout universe, that means you've got a full two years worth of mods to catch up on! Graphics mods, skill mods, UI mods, new quest mods, and (of course) nude mods -- there are tens of thousands available, and far more than any one person could ever even play in a single lifetime.
So to get you started off right, we're rounding up a lineup of tried and true mod stalwarts that have always been Fallout 4 staples, as well as some newer offerings that will mesh well with F4's Game Of The Year edition.
Note that these are all free mods, and unlike Bethesda we're going to actually call them mods. As such, we won't be listing any of the paid 'not-mod' nonsense from the Creation Club (which is just paid mods by another name). Now that we've got that little tidbit out of the way, lets get onto the must-have Fallout 4 GOTY mods!
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch
If you've got a huge, open world Bethesda game, your very first order of business should be to find and download the unofficial fan patch. Like this one, it's guaranteed to fix hundreds of bugs, both major and minor, from small issues with items and dialog to big problems with quests and markers.
Best of all? The huge number of changes are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, so they don't ever break other mods or become irrelevant with new patches. This is essential download material for Fallout 4 Game of the Year edition.
No More Creation Club News
Now that you've got the unofficial patch installed, the next order of business is to get rid of the Creation Club News marquee taking up the corner of your screen, which can be really annoying.
If you want to drop real-world money in-game on small cosmetic changes that are readily available elsewhere as free mods, well, that's your business. But for the rest of us, downloading this mod helps us reclaim the Fallout 4 experience we want to have.
Hopefully, the fact that this is consistently in the Top 10 endorsed mods list every single week sends a clear and obvious message to the developers and publishers out there.
Full Dialog Interface
OK, so we've patched all the bugs and gotten rid of the Creation Club nonsense, so now it's time to fix Bethesda's other major Fallout 4 stumble -- the condensed dialog wheel.
Half of the time the paraphrased example doesn't even really match the real dialog that's said. And there's no question the full voice acted main character really cut down on the dialog options in comparison to previous games.
While there's not much to be done about the latter, the former is handily dealt with using this mod that changes things back to the classic Fallout dialog tree, showing exactly what will be conveyed with each option. Again, this is another essential mod for the best F4 GOTY experience.
Sim Settlements
One of the elements of Fallout 4 that was most touted prior to release is also the element that is probably the most heavily modded: F4 settlements. Although changes and additions were made with the game's official add-ons, there's still plenty about settlement building and settler duty-assigning that's pretty rough around the edges.
Sim Settlements is much different from the typical settlement mod in that it drastically changes how settlements work, rather than just simply adding new objects.
The goal of the settlements mod is to make it so you are the leader of any given settlement -- and not its micro-manager. The mod brings in 'zones' that can be placed (in the manner of Sim City) that prompt your settlers to plant crops, connect water supplies, and construct buildings of a specific type.
Every settlement will end up unique using this overhaul, and a progression system is added in so that building settlements is more satisfying and less of something you have to do every so often.
Settlement Management Software
Going the opposite direction of the previous mod, this one gives you greater micromanagement powers -- and from a distance as well. Instead of having to manually walk up to any given settler, you can automatically assign them to a settlement object from a terminal.
This simple terminal program also lets you move settlers between towns, assign supply routes, and check a settlement's stats all in one clean interface. This will be a great addition to your Fallout 4 GOTY collection. Because let's face it: quality of life upgrades are always welcome.
Homemaker
While the various Steam Workshop add-ons did expand the settlement creation options, there's always room for more ways to customize your perfect post-apocalyptic settlement in Fallout 4.
That's where the Homemaker mod for F4 comes into play, adding in an astounding 1,000 additional items, from toilets to walls, appliances, and knick knacks. Don't even think about starting your own vault or settlement without downloading this mod first!
Visible Companion Affinity
This mod feels like it should have already been in a menu screen somewhere! As the name suggests, the mod tells you the current affinity level of any companion, as well as notifying you of the specific amount their affinity dropped or increased as you interact with companions or make choices that upset or excite them.
If you want your journey through Fallout 4's Wasteland to go smoother -- or you're just up for some friendly skullduggery -- this is a must-download mod.
K-9 Harness
For how often he appeared in the marketing for Fallout 4's pre-release, Dog Meat really didn't offer that much to F4 players when the game finally arrived. Let's rectify that with a customizable mod that lets you craft a new harness for your faithful hound, giving him more carrying capacity, different colored outfits, extra armor, and more!
Traits And Perks
Miss the old style of traits and perks from the previous Fallout games? This recreates them in Fallout 4 after a fashion (and adds in new additions).
While they can't be directly brought over to the new perk system with its unlimited level cap and new level S.P.E.C.I.A.L. screen without causing some major problems, this mod brought them back in a roundabout way using the crafting system.
Now you just have to craft a specific type of item that grants you the new traits/perks, and you can easily remove everything to respec your character on the fly from the ground up.
Craft Ammo
While the Contraptions Workshop DLC added an ammunition station that slowly churns out ammo at a fairly high power cost, it isn't really an economical option.
This Fallout 4 mod has been here all along, letting you do something that should have been there from Day 1: craft any standard ammo type at a chemistry station. So instead of throwing your junk away, download this mod for F4 GOTY and craft that refuse into something explosive.
Stop slogging for ammo -- seriously. It's not becoming ..
Weightless Junk
Possibly the single most helpful Fallout 4 mod in all existence, this indispensable little addition to the game makes one small, but powerful change: most of the random junk found in the Commonwealth -- from wrenches to tin cans -- just simply has no weight.
All your weight and inventory management just became incredibly easy, and there will be far less frustration in carrying around resources before you can dump them at a crafting station.
Any Mod Any Weapon
This one lets you go absolutely hog wild on weapon crafting, letting you add absolutely any modification to any weapon. Put a MIRV launcher on an automatic rifle so you can fire off dozens of nukes a round; give a scope to your rocket launcher; or add any other ludicrously awesome combination you can come up with!
Needless to say, this Fallout 4 mod pretty much breaks balance and lets you make weapons the developer most certainly did not intend. Note: To use this mod, you need the Armor And Weapons Keyword Community Resource installed first.
True Storms
There's a reason this is one of the most-downloaded Fallout 4 mods of all time -- and you should find out why by downloading it yourself at your earliest convenience!
Totally overhauling the weather systems in Fallout 4, the True Storms mod brings in new sound effects, textures, particle effects, and much more for a complete change to how rain and storms work.
This is more than just adding dreary rain to the game, however, as it also brings customizable radiation storms and ghoul attacks to F4 GOTY!
Welcome To Goodneighbor
Between the base game and the Automatron/Nuka World/Far Harbor expansions, there's already a staggering number of quests to undertake in Fallout 4. But frankly, there's always room for more in the Commonwealth!
As the name implies, this mod adds several new quests, assassination missions, buildings, enemies, items, and more to the Goodneighbor settlement. There's also somewhere in the neighborhood of 500+ lines of dialog added, greatly extending out your Fallout 4 experience.
Fusion City Rising
Another quest/area mod, this one offers up three new companions, a whole new city, extra factions, a ludicrous nightclub, an entirely new vault, and nuclear explosions galore!
It's a top-notch combination of over-the-top action and legitimately fun quest lines that go in directions you might not expect. If you want to try out the various new questlines made by modders but aren't sure where to start, there are far worse places to begin than Fusion City Rising.
Have fun trekking across the revamped Commonwealth wasteland with these 15 must-install Fallout 4 GOTY mods! Did we miss any other mods that enhanced your experience? Let us know about the best mods out there you've tried in the comments below!
Of course, 15 mods out of tens of thousands barely scrapesthe surface of what's available. If you're still looking for even more Fallout 4 mods, check out our Fallout 4 mods page. Here are a few to get you started:
Published Sep. 25th 2017
There's no question Fallout 4 was a step up in the graphics department from the previous gen entries in the series, but when dealing with such large open world areas and being constrained by console ports, there's always room for improvement on the visual side.
Bethesda recently addressed this very issue with high resolution texture pack free DLC -- and while it did make some textures look a bit better, the package as a whole wasn't exactly awe-inspiring.
If you're seeking the best possible Commonwealth visual experience, we've rounded up 13 different Fallout 4 graphics overhaul mods you'll want to install ASAP. And unlike the official texture pack, none of these mods will take up an extra 58 gigs of hard drive space!
Improved And Expanded Everything
The title really says it all here. This go-to visual overhaul mod improves on expanding pretty much everything.
If you don't want to mess with a bunch of different mods that may not play nice with each other, this all-in-one pack makes big changes to all things graphical and offers a smoother experience than vanilla Fallout 4.
Water Enhanced
For less flat visuals on water, this mod updates the textures on nearly all liquid (non-blood) surfaces. Whether it's larger bodies of water like lakes and rivers, or even just small puddles while crossing roads, everything gets an update for a more realistic, wet appearance.
Wasteland Salon - Hair Texture Improvement Mod
Do you find the basic vanilla hair in Fallout 4 to be too flat and boring? With this little modification, hair on the Sole Survivor, companions, and all NPCs get an upgrade for a more textured, less shiny appearance.
All Weapons HD
Considering the huge amount of time you spend staring at a weapon that takes up a significant portion of the screen, it's odd that there aren't way more of these HD weapon mods available.
This one upscales the textures and improves eye candy on every single base weapon in the game. Many of the handles and various wood/metal flat surfaces on weapons get a significant boost in the graphics department.
Enhanced Blood
If you've got enhanced weapons, water, and hair, it only makes sense to make the blood of your many enemies look its best as well!
The Enhanced Blood mod replaces and improves combat blood, decapitation spurts, and on-screen splatter, in addition to increasing the overall amount displayed in any given combat. In a fun twist, it also makes robotic enemies 'bleed' black oil.
Power Armor HUD Update
This is a little thing that makes a big difference. Just by taking the power armor HUD from its transparent style to a more substantial version of bolted steel, the entire feel of the game is radically changed.
Dvd audio solo activation key. Hopping into your power armor feels more like riding around in a mech than stomping across the Commonwealth in a suit of metal armor.
Wasteland Creatures Redone
Fallout 4 Graphics Overhaul Mod
After you've seen the same ghouls and deathclaws a couple of hundred times, the creature designs in Fallout 4 can get monotonous.
There's a cure for that though, with this mod that completely overhauls the textures from the ground up. From bloatflies to yao guai, most of the enemies you come across will look significantly better after installing this retexture compilation.
Commonwealth Trash Removal Overhaul
There are several different mods that all approach this problem from different angles -- and whether its an improvement or not depends on personal preference.
If you don't like how every area looks like people in the future decided the ground is now one giant trash can, this removal overhaul totally cleans out the vast majority of the wasteland's surfaces to simply remove all the worthless trash everywhere.
Pipboy/Headlamp Shadows
Another one that makes a small change for a big impact, this mod causes the Pipboy and several different headlamp items to cast distinctive shadows for a little extra visual immersion. For interiors, underground areas, and anything outside during the night cycle, this mod creates a bigger change than you'd think.
Best Fallout 4 Graphics Mods Pc
The Beautifier
Half joke and half utterly amazing mod, The Beautifier lets you turn the Commonwealth from bleached out wasteland into verdant green paradise..if you're willing to put in some effort.
The mod gives you a new shotgun that fires blasts of peppy green grass onto any surface. Have fun seeding the wasteland for future generations!
Decay Reshade Preset
Rather than heavily modifying the base textures of buildings, flora, or creatures, this mod instead tweaks all the colors and shadings. The end result is a desaturated and moody color change that offers a very different feel than the base experience while traversing the settlements of the Commonwealth.
Mega Explosions
Who doesn't love bigger and better explosions? You'd think mini-nukes would take out at least a whole city block or so, and with Mega Explosions - they do!
The size and force of every type of explosion from grenades to rockets is doubled -- and that includes damage, so be very careful when out in the open around enemies who like to lob explosives at you!
Pipboy Texture Overhaul
We're finishing off this list of Fallout 4 graphics upgrade mods with an overhaul for a critical but frequently overlooked element of the game: the Pipboy!
You'll be pulling it up hundreds or thousands of times across any given playthrough, so why not make sure it looks the best it can? This particular mod replaces the screws, cogs, and lamp, upgrades the textures, and tweaks the map.
What essential Fallout graphics mods do you recommend we should try out for our next playthrough? Let us know in the comments section!
